Machine in the Garden

Knoxville, TN

The goal of this project was to design a communal space that responds to the site and magnifies the consciousness. We were tasked to explore our site with less common means of documentation, namely video documentation and to incorporate these videos into our final presentation.

Chinati Foundation Hotel

Marfa, TX

A portion of the students from my year were given the opportunity to travel to Marfa, Texas in order to immerse ourselves in the modern art and culture that this town is famous for. This project is a hotel/retreat for visitors to the Chinati Foundation just outside of Marfa. The design is a response to the culture, climate and to Donald Judd. A series of units cascade from a massive concrete box that serves as their protection into the beautiful but wild American  landscape. At the ground level these units form the canopy of a covered outdoor cafeteria for the residents as well as for visitors to the Chinati Foundation.

Revitalizing East Nashville's

Urban Fabric

Nashville, TN

Our class, a mixture of graduate and undergraduate students were given the opportunity of designing sixteen urban blocks over what is now a "spaghetti junction" across the river, east of downtown Nashville. My group chose the two central blocks, the "new gateway" into east Nashville. Our goal was to design mixed use residential and retail that elegantly frames a large public square. We collaborated with students from Vanderbilt who conducted a market study for the site.
